Recycling requirements for California State are outlined in Assembly Bill 939, "which establishes that each jurisdiction in the state reduce the amount of waste going to landfills by 50%."

AB 939 (Sher)--The Integrated Waste Management Act--Established the "California Integrated Waste Management Act (IWMA) of 1989." Repealed the majority of Title 7.3 of the Government Code, regulating solid waste management, and codified the new Act in the Public Resources Code. Also repealed provisions of the Health and Safety Code, related to garbage and refuse disposal, and codified them in the Public Resources Code.
